On Wednesday Dec 16th the 8th in a series of sit-ins targeting elected officials, coal and tar sands financiers and industries took place at the Calgary office of Prime Minister Stephen Harper!
The Group called for his resignation due to his failure to represent the will of the Canadian people in Copenhagen! Prime Minister Harper has refused to fulfill Canada’s obligations to reduce climate pollution and support vulnerable communities. In fact it has been revealed that Harper and Environment Minister Jim Prentice are seeking special breaks for huge polluters like the Alberta Tar Sands (http://www.cbc.ca/politics/story/2009/12/15/prentice-oil-sands.html )!
“Demanding a Prime Minister’s resignation may seem extreme. Frankly, we don’t know what alternatives remain. We have written letters to our representatives, we have requested meetings with our representatives and we have worked on climate change solutions in our communities for years,” says sit-in participant Susan Stratton. “Canada’s government is still obstructing climate talks and refusing to make any real change. This shows despicable disregard for future generations and for the millions already dying and losing their homes because of climate change. Now is the time for new, real leadership”
It is beyond clear that Canadians are fed up with their federal government, that we are tired of being ignored, that we are tired of our leaders ignoring the world and having their heads stuck in the Tar Sands!
Failure to adequately address the problems posed by the environmental crisis is criminal negligence, it will result in the death and displacement of millions, and we will hold our government to this charge!
As the talks in Copenhagen begin to come to an end, it is clear that there is no end in sight for Canadians and their fight for environmental and climate justice.
In other words: can’t stop, won’t stop.
