Congress set to muzzle EPA and defund clean energy, while protecting oil subsidies

Amendments to the budget bill could block regulations for air pollution, mountaintop removal, and offshore drilling. If you keep track of politics, you’re probably aware that the budget debate in the House of Representatives is in full swing. The reinvigorated Republican Party is eager to push its agenda, while the Administration, concerned about re-election, seems willing to make some serious concessions. Curious what’s on the table? You might not want to know, unless you’re an oil executive. When it comes to program-axing, clean energy and environmental spending is at... (continue reading)

Vote Chevron into the “Corporate Hall of Shame”

Chevron is up for a huge award this month and we need your votes (VOTE HERE)  to help them win this much-deserved award. Each year ten corporations are (dis)honored by being named as finalists in the “Corporate Hall of Shame”.  This year Corporate Accountability International has deemed Chevron worthy of their final list because of the company’s toxic legacy of pollution in the Ecuadorean rainforest. It will surely be a close race as Chevron is up against some stiff competition: Monsanto – “for mass-producing cancer causing chemicals, aggressively running small farms out of... (continue reading)

His name, for the purpose of this article, is Joe.  Not Joe the Plumber but Joe the Farmer.  He lives with his wife, fifty chickens, and a seventeen-year-old cat on a dirt road in a small Alabama town.  He wears a black cowboy hat with Carhartt blue jeans, and he keeps his beard long and scraggly. Although he’s hardly your typical eco-warrior, people like him may play a major role in our sustainable future. Joe, a small-scale farmer, sells organic vegetables and free-range eggs to folks who live nearby.  His customers can buy food locally.  Their blueberries and tomatoes are grown... (continue reading)

Massive Wind Turbine Leak Causes Disaster

On Saturday morning, a wind turbine in North Dakota exploded, leading to the biggest wind spill since 1987, in Copenhagen. The turbine, developed by NextEra Resources was one of 99 active turbines on the ND farm. A NextEra representative told reporters the cause of the leak is blade failure. While the exact chain of events is still unclear, the failure led to an ignition of the flammable wind around the turbine, and then an explosion that destroyed the entire turbine. There is now a gaping hole where the turbine used to be, and wind is leaking out quickly. NextEra refuses to tell the... (continue reading)

A Hostile Climate – RAN's RBC Campaign in Maclean's Magazine!

RAN and the folks at RAN Toronto have been working super hard over most of 2009 to put pressure on RBC to respect Indigenous Rights and stop financing the Alberta Tar Sands! So we are so excited to see the campaign written about in Maclean’s Magazine ( a popular Canadian news magazine)! This is a huge step in spreading awareness and lighting the fire, and despite some of claims made about the numbers apparently disputed by RBC it is a great article and worth a read… so read it! A Hostile Climate – A radical activist group targets RBC. This time it’s personal. My personal... (continue reading)
