Amendments to the budget bill could block regulations for air pollution, mountaintop removal, and offshore drilling. If you keep track of politics, you’re probably aware that the budget debate in the House of Representatives is in full swing. The reinvigorated Republican Party is eager to push its agenda, while the Administration, concerned about re-election, seems willing to make some serious concessions. Curious what’s on the table? You might not want to know, unless you’re an oil executive. When it comes to program-axing, clean energy and environmental spending is at... (continue reading)

Egypt’s Youth Revolution

Image via flickr user Sarah Carr. On what has become known as “The Day of Revolt” — January 25, 2011 — thousands of Egyptians took to the streets to protest the regime of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak, and so began one of the most successful and influential peaceful protests in history. Inspired by the effective Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia earlier in January, which succeeded in ousting Tunisian president Ben Ali from power, the Egyptian revolutionaries raised their voices in opposition to the extreme poverty, rampant unemployment, increased police brutality and government... Is anyone else frustrated to see that they are using plastic water bottles? Image via Flickr user UN Climate Talks (cc). This time of year, many of us find ourselves fantasizing about warm weather, white-sand beaches, palm trees and clear blue water.  In December, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) got to fulfill that fantasy, although it wasn’t supposed to be for fun…. From November 29 through December 10, the UNFCCC, which is charged with determining what can be done to reduce global warming and to cope with inevitable temperature increases, met... Documentary explores true social and environmental costs of coal power, exposes danger of “clean coal” hopes The Center for Investigative Reporting has launched the screening of its new documentary, Dirty Business. Narrated by Jeff Goodell, author of Big Coal and contributing editor of Rolling Stone, the film investigates “clean coal and the battle for our energy future.” Can coal ever really be made “clean”? If we were to try to wean ourselves off coal, how would we keep the lights on? Is renewable energy ready for prime time? …DIRTY BUSINESS seeks... (continue reading)

If you’ve been following politics at all recently, I think it’s pretty safe to assume that from a purely environmental standpoint, you are, like me, feeling frustrated.  I mean, we have Rep. Joe Barton attempting to head the Energy and Commerce committee because he wants to destroy energy saving light bulbs (true story), and Rep. Ralph Hall, a notorious global warming skeptic, is going to be be the new chair of the Committee on Science and Technology.  Unfortunately, this is only the beginning.  Head, meet desk. 350 Earth Aerial Art Show: A Planetary Vision of a Planetary Challenge

Cross-posted from Through a Green Lens. Over the past week, thousands of people in thirteen countries staged the world’s first art show visible from space. Coordinated by 350.org, the project included aerial installations from Los Angeles to Egypt to Iceland. Like October’s Global Work Party, this event highlighted our species’ vulnerability to climate change–and our ability to find solutions. DigitalGlobe, a Colorado-based aerial imaging company, photographed the formations with satellites 400 miles above the equator. The project ended November 27, just in time... (continue reading)
Mountaintop Removal: Not Just an Environmental Issue

Mountaintop Removal: Not Just an Environmental Issue

I spent the last week of October in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, hiking, photographing the rivers and foliage, and taking in the stunning landscapes. While the trip made my RYSE post a bit late, it also deepened my understanding of the value of pristine mountains, specifically the Appalachians. Because of their National Park status, the Smoky Mountains are safe from coal mining. However, as RYSE readers know, hundreds of mountains in Tennessee, West Viriginia, Virginia, and Kentucky have been literally blown up by mining companies in search of coal. If you study mountaintop removal... (continue reading)

The American Way: Comfort and Convenience, No Matter the Consequences

If you follow current events (or if, like me, you watch the Colbert Report), you’ve likely heard some of the recent public outcry over the cold shoulder Frito Lay gave the environmental movement by scrapping SunChips’ compostable packaging.  Apparently, after 18 months of producing the bag, consumer feedback overwhelmingly showed that they were “too loud,” and product sales were suffering as a result.  While I wish I were joking, it’s the truth:  American consumers care more about how much noise their bag of chips makes than they do about the impact those bags have on the...
