Carbon in the Ocean: More Dangerous than Oil in the Gulf?

Carbon in the Ocean: More Dangerous than Oil in the Gulf?

It will soon have been five months since the Deepwater Horizon exploded and the ensuing disaster spilled across headlines. Being particularly awful, the Gulf oil spill occupied the spotlight longer than many catastrophes do. But now the leak is under control; the oil is being cleaned up. Heck, 74 percent just disappeared, according to the government.  The media has moved on, and life with it. Actually, most of the spilled oil was still in the Gulf in early August, when an independent team of oceanographers released their study. But that’s another story. In light of the past summer’s... They say third day’s the charm. The sun is out, music is blasting from the cooking bus and almost ninety eco-justice activist and trainers are ready to learn and share talents. I think I believe it. For the past two days I’ve spent my time and energy at the Advanced Ruckus Camp on Eco-Justice in Harmony Park, Minnesota.  I am one out of around 85 organizers who are the best of the best in the field; of course this includes the Ruckus staff who are exceptionally good at what they do. Strategy Training The training is based on three tracks: climbing, blockade, and arts &... (continue reading)

We want environmental laws to be implemented and enforced. We want the authority and relevant agencies to go after anyone and everyone who is cutting down trees in protected forest areas and such. Yet, sometimes, it might not be that simple. I visited an Orang Asli (indigenous people) village in Tapah, Perak with a group of awesome people who aim to educate the Malaysian public and increase awareness of the Federal Constitution. Several topics were being brought up: Orang Asli rights as stipulated in the Constitution, unfair land purchases, standing up against corporations or entities that... (continue reading)

The mountain behind my home is destroyed – gone forever – and across the valley Massey Energy is... (continue reading)

Compromising on the Future: When Political Action Isn’t Enough

“Comprehensive climate change legislation.”  How many times have we heard that phrase in the last few years?  It has been used by environmental groups to describe what they think we need.  And it’s been used by Congress to label several of its bills. The American Clean Energy and Security Act, a.k.a. the Waxman-Markey bill, was called “comprehensive.”  But, by the time it passed, it was weighed down with coal funding and weakened by compromises with fossil fuel industries. Still, it was better than nothing – and better than the Senate managed.  The Senate’s energy... (continue reading)

With the BP crisis as their impetus, the ‘Bayou Healers’ aim to publicize environmental concerns and strengthen a weakened tribal identity Crossposted from solveclimate.com by Jacoba Charles – Aug 9th, 2010 GOLDEN MEADOWS, LA—The twisted silhouettes of leafless trees dot the marsh around the homeland of southern Louisiana’s Houma tribe. Telephone poles list sideways in the water that laps at the edges of many roads. It wasn’t always this way. These changes to the landscape serve as stark symbols of the myriad social and environmental problems facing... (continue reading)
