Iceland: Week One

Iceland: Week One

Wow, that was an amazing week. Just the fact that it’s taken me till day 7 to sit down and write something should tell you something about how much we’re doing here in Iceland. It’s about 11pm here, it’s still completely light out (the sun goes down for about 3 hours per day, but it’s never really dark), and I am exhausted. This has honestly been the best week of my entire life, hands down. I’ve achieved at least 5 of my life goals, and I’m expecting a few more over the next part of this journey. Let me list a few here: For one, I saw my first glacier... (continue reading)
Why isn’t climate change real to us?

Why isn’t climate change real to us?

For many reasons, the climate change movement has not been able to bring about the scale of changes we need to actually solve the climate crisis. Even though there are millions of people putting hundreds of millions of dollars and years of time into the effort, are we any better off than we were 10 years ago? Sure, there are more “activists” now than there were then. But at the same time, there are more deniers, and the political system has become so crazy that we can’t even get support for a diluted climate bill that has so many loopholes for the fossil fuel industry that... Reaching the U.S. Social Forum

Reaching the U.S. Social Forum

After 5 days on the road, the People’s Freedom Caravan made its way into Detroit for the opening march and ceremony of the U.S. Social Forum. And the caravanistas did not arrive empty handed. The 5 days on the bus stopping from community to community, meeting our brothers and sisters in the struggle had left its mark. As we winded our way up from one U.S. border to the other, we gained a sense of freedom – freedom from silence, freedom from hopelessness, and freedom from isolation. We heard the stories of the indigenous Ponca people, who stressed that our ancestors had made... (continue reading)

Gearing up in Detroit for Clean Air, Good Jobs & Justice!

This is my 4th day in Detroit, and I am so psyched for the next 4 days! I came to Detroit for two events: the Rising Tide North America (RTNA) All-Network Convergence, and the U.S. Social Forum (USSF)! While at the RTNA convergence, I had the opportunity to meet with local organizers from Detroit and hear about some of the environmental justice issues they work on in their communities. I’ve also had the honor of helping them prepare for a big rally and march they’re having on Saturday morning. The Clean Air, Good Jobs, Justice for All march will target a dirty trash incinerator... Youth Empowered Action Camp – spots open for this summer!

Posted by Kasha on May 31st, 2010 in RYSE | 1 comment

We just heard about the Youth Empowered Action Camp being held this summer – for youth ages 11-16. Youth who attend YEA are passionate or maybe even just curious about making a difference in the world. It sounds awesome. Are you interested? Know someone who might be? Check it out. Have you ever wished you could make more of a difference in the world? There are so many ways you can! Maybe you’re concerned about global warming, about violence in your neighborhood, about ending homelessness or animal cruelty, or about everyone having the right to get married? Maybe you just... How I first learned about mountaintop removal

How I first learned about mountaintop removal

I went to college on the coast of North Carolina – a medium sized school called UNC Wilmington. During my first semester there, I realized that my environmental-minded thinking was definitely in the minority. There was negligible activism, no environmental club, and the dorms barely even recycled. Not really knowing how to change things, I just dealt with the unfortunate circumstance handed to me by choosing this school and focused on my environmental science major. In the spring of my junior year, I was phonebanked by someone with Greenpeace (how did they have my number? that’s a... (continue reading)

Reminiscing about the first US Social Forum (USSF) gives me chills.  I traveled there as part of the Peoples Freedom Caravan (PFC) delegation from San Antonio, TX.  We planned our route to Atlanta with stops in several towns and cities where we had the privilege of meeting with other grassroots communities.  Each place we stopped, it seemed like everybody was connected by the same big struggle for justice, and that connection was a powerful, moving thing.   The journey was part chaos; the buses were picking up people, and it was loud and sometimes uncomfortable.    But connecting...
